Giving Unshakeable Thanks in a Shaking World
Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
In 20 years, if a girl asks what you gave thanks for in COVID (not for COVID!), how will you respond?
Martin Rinkart’s world was shaking. He was a German pastor in 1636, amid the darkness of the Thirty Years’ War. It was said that he buried five thousand of his parishioners in one year, an average of fifteen a day. We don’t have to wonder what Martin gave God thanks for in those circumstances. He penned his words and wrote a table grace for his children that we still sing today.
Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, Who wonderous things has done, in Whom this world rejoices. Who, from our mothers’ arms, has blessed us on our way, with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
Martin didn’t thank God for war, death, and economic disaster. Instead, he gave unshakeable thanks to God in it.
Friend, we can do the same. Though our world shakes, we can give unshakeable thanks when we focus on Truth. Our unshakeable God is in you, with you, and for you. You are LOVED.
Now go tell a girl!
Dear God, thank You for being our unshakeable God. Thank You for Your countless gifts of love—including Your Son, this sisterhood, and our GEMS girls. In Jesus’ name, amen.
