The Everlasting Rock
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock” (Isaiah 26:3-4, ESV).
Are your thoughts swirling with anxiety, doubt, and fear? What can you cling to?
Recently, I went on a hike near a rushing stream. To my right, the water seemed smooth. To my left, the water was choppy, and there was a big drop-off. I imagined how difficult it would be to stay afloat in the rough rapids.
This reminds me of something. Some days, I can be having a great day, thinking on whatever is true and lovely (Philippians 4:8), and then all of a sudden, lies, doubts, worries, or temptations rush in, trying to push me off the cliff into panic, fear, and sin. I wonder if you’ve ever felt this way, too.
Amidst the crashing waters, I noticed a sturdy log. I imagined how difficult it would be for a swimmer to cling to the damp log as the current swirled around her. Friend, I want you to know that we have a God who holds onto us. He is our “everlasting rock” (Isaiah 26:4). We can cling to Him in both smooth waters and raging rapids; when our minds are filled with praise and gratitude and when our thoughts are churning with anxiety. He is our peace.
How can we cling to God as our strong Rock? As Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV) says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock”. Thinking on the Lord doesn’t always mean that the swirling lies, doubts, and temptations will settle around us. But, we can experience the peace of the Lord within us—knowing and believing He is holding onto us amidst the rising waters all around. The good news is, He’ll never let go.
So, friend, if you feel like you’re battling upstream today, fighting the current of your thoughts, I urge you to lift your eyes to God, our strong Rock. Cling to Him through prayer; tell Him whatever’s on your heart and mind and thank Him for all He has done (Philippians 4:6). Remember where your help comes from: God (Psalm 121). He is stronger than whatever you face. Trust His promise never to leave nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). For those of us who have trusted Christ as our Savior, we can hold onto hope as we look forward to life with Him forever, free of the troubles of this world.
May we experience God’s peace as we think on Him today. He is our strong, everlasting Rock.
Let’s pray:
Dear God, thank You for being our everlasting Rock. We can trust You in smooth waters and raging rapids of life. When our thoughts swirl with anxiety, doubt, fear, and temptation, You invite us to think on You. As we turn our thoughts to You, please help us to experience Your peace that passes all understanding. Even if waters continue to rise around us, we can trust that You will never leave nor forsake us; You will never let go of us. Please help us to trust You more and more! In Jesus’s name, amen.
