For the Birds

Birds are going to be hungry when they get home. Make this birdseed craft for the birds flying back early, or the ones sticking out the winter. It’s fun, easy, and a yummy snack for migrating birds.

What You Need

  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) boiling water
  • 2 packets unflavored gelatin
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups (350-470 mL) birdseed
  • Cookie cutters
  • Straws cut into 2-inch (50 mm) segments
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet
  • String

Directions

  1. Have a grown-up help you boil the water. Then,
add the packets of gelatin to the water. Stir until
    the gelatin disappears.
  2. Add the birdseed and stir.
  3. Cover the cookie sheet with parchment paper. Put the cookie cutters on top.
  4. Spoon birdseed mix into each cookie cutter. Add a straw to one side. Then press firmly on birdseed until it’s firm. The straw will keep a hole open for your string.
  5. Put in the fridge and leave for at least 2 hours.
  6. Take the sheet out of the fridge and pop the birdseed out of the cookie cutters. Let it dry overnight.
  7. Pull a string through the hole and tie a knot to make a loop. Hang the birdseed from a tree branch. Watch
for birds to stop by for a treat!
